Arthur

Arthur graduated from Stanford University in 2014 with degrees in philosophy and classics. Both his majors were inspired by his work in these fields at Stanford OHS. Arthur noted that the Stanford OHS Core curriculum (and Dr. Scarborough in particular) was instrumental in inspiring him to pursue a career in philosophy. At Stanford, he was on staff for both the philosophy journal and the classics journal. He received funding from Stanford to present at a conference of the Southern Society of Philosophy and Psychology in Charleston, South Carolina. By the time he graduated, he had published five articles in peer-reviewed undergraduate journals.

After graduating from Stanford, Arthur switched coasts and headed to Yale law school, where he’s just finishing his first year. Arthur described the most notable thing about the change of scenery this way: “There was heavy snow on the ground for more than two months straight, and the trees are only now regaining their leaves after having lost them for about five months. I am a person who prefers warm climates, so this presented a rather dramatic transition from California.” But after adjusting to his new environment, Arthur concluded that “Yale is an excellent place to study law, with many friendly and very intelligent students deeply invested in pursuing law as a discipline, and with professors having great breadth of interest and expertise in an impressive array of specializations.” Arthur has particularly enjoyed his second semester courses, including Property and Criminal Law, Philosophy of Law, and a seminar in Private Law and Public Order. He has also enjoyed his position as an editor for the Yale Journal of International Law. Arthur plans to pursue a Ph.D. in philosophy though the joint Ph.D./J.D. program at Yale. He also plans to clerk at an appeals court after law school, and aspires to a Supreme Court clerkship.

In reminiscing about his first days at Stanford, Arthur recalled how he and Stanford OHS friend Eugenia O’Kelly, couldn’t wait for orientation to end to that they could begin their academic classes. Arthur emphasized that it is that intellectual interest and passion that makes Stanford OHS and Stanford OHSers so special.
