This course is a study and practice in writing short fiction. Students will work on setting, characters, plot, structure, dialogue, and other aspects of the genre. They will read short fiction and essays on developing writing skills and analyzing their own work. They will participate in a series of writing exercises focused on writing short fiction. The class is a workshop setting, where students learn to critique a peer’s work in a useful and respectful manner. They will end the course with refined examples of their own short fiction.
Students are encouraged to take the course more than once to work on their writing in this classroom and community environment. Each semester of Short Fiction will involve new readings and writing assignments to foster exploration for students taking the course more than one semester.
